How Skin Functions, What Its Role Is & Why A Wholistic Approach Makes Sense

Skin.

You see it every time you look at yourself in a mirror, you make contact with it whenever you touch your face, lick your lips or scratch an itch.


But what is skin exactly?


Well, as you may have guessed, it's the tissue that covers our bodies. And did you know that it is in fact the largest organ of the human body?

Skin can be dry, sensitive, oily and irritated, and is usually covered with hair and various different spots such as freckles. The environment can have an impact on it, like being burned by the sun, or dry from the wind.

But what does it do? What is its purpose?

It has various important roles, including being responsible for a large part of our immune health. Think of it as the large wall that is guarding your castle (your body); it is the waterproof layer of protection defending us against outside invaders, and a powerful regulator, bringing the body back into balance through internal temperature control, vitamin D synthesis and hormone production.


As the body's first point of contact with the outside world, it's able to recognize things through its sensory neurons that can feel heat, cold, pain and textures. This allows for communication to our brain to let it know if there is danger present and how to help the body adapt to its surroundings, like signaling to the sudoriferous glands (sweat glands) to start producing sweat to help us cool down when we are hot.

Only when we start to heal the body as a whole can we truly achieve the healthiest version of this beautiful organ.


The skin is also our connection to our inner organs, serving as a visible indicator of internal issues, as it can be affected by our hormones, diet and even our mood, which is why it is often referred to as the "mirror" that reflects our internal health. You may have noticed your skin going through some not-so-great changes when you've been stressed, or maybe you've felt like you've had a nice glowing complexion whenever you've felt great physically, mentally and emotionally. Emotions can play a huge role not only in our skin's health but our body's overall state.


Like the saying goes, beauty is more than skin deep. It's not enough to put a fresh coat of paint on an old house if the foundation isn't stable. You'll end up with a pretty-looking broken down house. Skin is the same. Care for your entire well being as well as your skin and you will not only see a huge difference in your complexion, but you will even feel your skin glowing.
