"Definition of synergy: the interaction of elements that when combined, produce a total effect that is greater than the sum of the individual elements contributions." (According to dictionary.com)
I love this. The word "synergy" makes me think of connection, transition, progress, growth, collaboration, positivity.
Life does not exist without synergy. The universe, the Earth, all living things, all energy, even the cells within our bodies.
In today's society, we commonly isolate things or focus one just one thing, like active ingredients in our products, to how we treat our bodies (treating symptoms or just one area of the body).
Yet, everything in our lives that exists in natural form does not work solely by itself. Everything is dependent on connection, working synergistically with its surroundings.
Take our bodies as an example. This may sound a bit strange if you haven't heard this one before but YOU are not really just YOU. What I mean by that, is that we have more living organisms in our bodies than the number of cells that make up our bodies.
Think about that for a minute.
We cannot exist without these organisms and their survival is dependent on our synergistic relationship. We feed them and keep them in balance, they keep us healthy and functioning. And we're just at the tip of the iceberg in truly knowing how deep and powerful this relationship really is.
Synergy and skincare go hand in hand as well, because that is how the skin functions. The skin is our largest organ and one that is connected and/or affected to or by virtually every system in our bodies. It is our main defense against external invaders, yet is delicate and requires care, nourishment and protection. Did I mention, we also have a ton of microorganisms (known as the microbiome) living on our skin?
Just like any other organ, the skin requires nutrition and hydration to achieve balance and health. The coolest part about the skin being on the outside is that is can obtain it both internally and externally. The beautiful synergistic relationship that the skin has with all parts and organs of the body, including the microbiome, allows us to be able to understand our bodies better as the skin can serve as an indicator to what's going on inside the body by responding with inflammation in various ways.
Although we we would prefer our skin to remain the same and never change, the truth is that because of its nature and its function (since it is, after all, an organ), the skin will always be fluctuating, and it's our job to try to decipher the skin's "code messages" (visual changes) to be able to get a better understanding of what's going on, where there might be some imbalances, and find a solution to be able to restore the balance and create synergy.
My goal is to keep that perspective when helping people with their skin issues, to serve as a reminder that the skin is always working in synergy with the rest of the body to achieve balance. In order to achieve the best possible skin health, would it not make sense to do more than just topical skincare? By caring for mind, body and soul, we will "produce a total effect that is greater than the sum of the individual elements contributions".
In other words, when we care for the skin by caring for the overall body (including mind and soul), our chances for a greater outcome are better than if we were to focus on the skin alone.
By doing skincare "wholistically", you are encouraging balance and connection, through a SYNERGISTIC approach, to achieve skin health. And that is a beautiful thing!
Sending glowing vibes your way and wishing you whole body health, always.
