The Ultimate 'Must-Haves' in Natural Skin Care

Updated: Aug 4

I am amazed at the effectiveness of the products on the market today.

Do you remember the days when you just needed to have an "astringent"? Everyone was on this kick of trying to somehow "purify" their skin with an alcohol-based solution, known as an astringent. They said it would clear out your pores, get rid of your pimples and give you clear skin. You'd smear this solution all over your skin and feel this intense sensation (maybe from the burning) but you thought to yourself, yes, its doing something! That may have been true for the first few days but as we continued with this trend, more and more people started to notice that eventually their skin started drying out and the oil they were so desperately trying to control had come back with a vengeance.

Well, I think its safe to say we've learned quite a bit since then and we have a better sense of what our own personal skincare needs are and know that there isn't a one-size-fits-all solution for everyone.

Having been in the skincare industry for almost 15 years, I’ve been fortunate to try many different products from various brands and I find it so cool to see what's trending in the beauty world. I have to say that I really love the direction we're heading in, with more importance being put on helping our skin (and body) do what is does naturally, by boosting its ability to repair, regenerate and protect. With some incredible advancements in science, especially in botanical skincare, it's amazing to see what can be created.

Consumer behavior has changed a lot over the years. Ten years ago we might have been more concerned over the texture, feel and smell of the product, whereas now the vast majority of consumers are wanting effective solutions that will benefit the skin's overall health. This brings me to my ultimate favorite products, which I consider to be gems in the natural skincare world, being both effective and lovely (a must for me anyway). I think of these products more like 'food for the skin' as opposed to skincare. Here are my top faves and why they rock:

Eminence Organics Facial Recovery Oil

Best for: Dry, dehydrated, sensitive, irritated and acne prone skin.

Key benefits: Softens the skin, deeply hydrates, reduces redness and irritation.

Why it is so great:

It not only looks like liquid gold, it is liquid gold! This product will leave you feeling like you have been bathing in a luxurious, nourishing elixir that has magical healing powers (or atleast feels like it!). This oil is truly one of a kind, it has been raved about my many, including celebrities. I have recommended this beautiful oil to many of my clients, some of which suffer from acne, eczema, rosacea and compromised skin.

Use: Every day under moisturizer, can be worn under daytime and nighttime moisturizer. Just apply 2-3 drops into palm of hands and massage gently into skin and watch your complexion glow!

Mad Hippie Vitamin A Serum

Best for: Aging, dull skin, hyperpigmented skin (dark spots).

Key benefits: Softens the skin, smooths out fine lines and wrinkles and brightens the complexion.

Why I love this product:

My experience with Mad Hippie products in general is that they always seem to be on the trendsetting end of the spectrum. Their formulas are light years ahead of most of their competitors, with revolutionary formulas that are effective, easy to use and affordable. Plus, their packaging is super colorful and fun, making them the brand you want to use and show off!

The Vitamin A serum is no exception to this rule, with their unique form of the vitamin called Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate or HPR, it becomes more bioavailable to the skin (less work to absorb) and along with the combination of humectants and phytoceramides, it works to reduce irritation and retain moisture in the skin, making it ideal for those who have a strong sensitivity to retinoid creams.

Use: Apply before bed, under night cream.

Tip: Start out slowly. It is advised to apply it once every few days and gradually work your way up to every day or every other day to avoid side effects such as peeling and irritation. If this occurs, reduce your usage to once every two or three days.

Caution: Vitamin A, just like retinoids, retinols and retinol alternatives, can increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun so be sure to put on some sunscreen before you leave the house!

Earth To Body Neem Clay

Best for: any inflammatory skin condition- eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, acne or other dry, itchy skin.

Key benefits: Skin feels soft, complexion is improved and helps to reduce redness and irritation.

Why it rocks: If you think this clay will dry your skin out, think again! This clay-neem-oatmeal mixture will leave your skin feeling so soft and toned. It is my favorite treatment to do when my skin is feeling stressed out or out of wack. It is especially effective after facial steaming!

Use: Can be used weekly or whenever needed. Mix a small amount with water and apply a thin coat to the skin, avoiding the eye area. Let it dry completely then rinse thoroughly.

Eminence Organics Lotus Overnight Detoxifying Treatment

Best for: dehydrated, environmentally damaged skin.

Key benefits: Prevents trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), detoxifies the skin and blocks environmental damage.

Why it's fantastic: Every time I apply this treatment, I feel like my skin is having a big drink of water. It is so light and so hydrating. The coolest part about this product is that it is hydrating the skin in 3 ways; by literally pulling moisture into the skin with its super hydrating lotus, it prevents moisture-loss and detoxifies the skin thanks for its potent micro-greens complex, and finally helps to seal it all in with the melt-on-your-skin jojoba spheres. What's not to love?

Use: Nightly, after cleansing and toning. Can be used under your favorite nighttime moisturizer for an added boost of hydration.

Andalou Pumpkin Honey Glycolic Mask

Best for: Normal/Combination skin types, hyperpigmented skin (dark spots), sun damaged/dull skin.

Key Benefits: Contains stem cell complex, vitamin C and manuka honey to help strengthen and repair damaged skin, along with enzymes like pumpkin to help gently resurface and brighten the complexion and antioxidants to boost nutrients and fight off free radicals!

What you will love about this product: All you have to do is slap this product on your face and let it do its magic! It is brightening, toning, hydrating and repairing. Plus I love having a dynamic exfoliating duo like glycolic acid doing all the heavy lifting by exfoliating the skin cells from the bottom up, while pumpkin gets in there like a hoover to clear up the dry, dead cells on the surface. You can't get any better than that. Actually, with it's affordable price, maybe you can!

Use: Can be used once or twice a week for 10-20 minutes on dry or damp skin for a luminous glow!

Eminence Organics Stone Crop Gel Wash

Best for: all skin types, including sensitive.

Key benefits: Soothing, brightening, nourishing. Contains green tea, meadowfoam, chamomile and shea butter.

What makes this product beautiful: Stone Crop is a succulent plant that is incredibly hydrating and has powerful soothing properties making it ideal for anyone, including babies!

If you have ever had inflamed, irritated skin, stone crop is an excellent choice to help pull heat from the skin and speed up the healing process. It also helps to brighten up dull skin. It doesn't even feel like a cleanser (although it cleanses like one), it feels like this hydrating gel like mixture that my skin just wants to soak up. Best part is, it smells incredibly fresh!

Use: Morning and night. Mix with water and apply to the skin in circular motions, making sure to reach all areas of the face. Rinse skin and gently pat dry.

Pure Creations Vitamin C Antimicrobial Elixir Oil

Best for: breakout-prone, irritated/inflamed skin, razor bumps.

Key Benefits: it has an impressive blend of antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory ingredients such as willow bark, wild pansy, pulsatilla, black cumin seed, calendula, frankincense and the list goes on. It also features tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, which is a stable and oil-soluble form of vitamin C that is believed to have greater absorption due to our skin's natural composition (oil loves oil).

What makes this elixir worth trying: Vitamin C topically can help reduce acne scars while stimulating collagen production, brightening the complexion and fighting free radical damage. Put that together with Pure Creations' own clear skin & hydrating complexes along with some potent anti-inflammatory ingredients, and you've got yourself the perfect recipe for blemish-free, radiant, glowing skin.

Use: Using the dropper, add 5-10 drops into the palms of your hands, making sure to distribute product evenly in your palms. Then gently press the oil into the skin, starting with cheeks, then forehead and chin. It can also be used as a spot treatment.
